Asalamu Alaikom friends,
Sometimes cultural understanding comes in strange and mysterious
ways — even in the form of a koala bear. A very special friend
recently gave me an unusual gift, which I am extremely excited
about. Her name is Charli, and boy is she a cutie. Now before you
get any crazy ideas, Charli lives in the Sydney, Australia Zoo and
is part of an adoption program that raises awareness about the
environment and endangered species like Charli’s.
Besides being a beautiful koala bear, Charli has already taught me a
lot about Australia. OK, maybe she hasn’t, but my curiosity about
her lead me to the Internet, where I did some catching up on the
Land Down Under. I have to admit, most people in the Gulf have
visions of koalas and kangaroos hopping around the streets, but I
learned that these two treasured Australian symbols are actually
endangered. The adoption program was started by one of my life time
heros the late Steve Irwin, aka The Crocodile Hunter, and has been
continued by his family. I really admired Irwin’s passion for
wildlife, and couldn’t be more pleased to be supporting his vision,
even if it was my friend who turned me on to the whole thing.
It got me to thinking that a similar program would work well in the
Emirates. We would gladly share our passion for camels, horses,
goats and gazelles with the world, who would then learn about the
desert lifestyle of our forefathers and the visionary environmental
work done by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nayhan.
Ramadan Kareem Everyone
